Asian avocado market

The customs figures allow us to draw a pre-balance of the health of the Asian markets during the 2022/23 season (summer season 2022 + winter season 2022/23)... and this is hardly positive. Regional imports, at around 145/150,000t in 20/21 and 21/22, are expected to fall back below 130,000t - their worst level since 2017/18. Performance is clearly poor in Japan. Despite the return to a good level of production in Mexico, its main supplier, imports continued the strong downward trend that began in 2021/22. The retail price, which has remained at a high level despite this large Mexican crop, seems to have weighed heavily on consumption. The other two major markets in the region are doing better, but are still rather lacklustre. Imports from South Korea have continued to grow at a moderate rate (+10,000 t in about 5 years), while the Chinese market has only confirmed the recovery recorded in 2021/22 (stable imports of around 50,000 t, after the low point of 35/36,000 t experienced in 2019/20 and 2020/21). Nevertheless, the potential of this continent, which is home to 60% of the world's population but absorbs barely 5% of the world's avocado trade, remains enormous. In 2022, the per capita consumption of South Korea, Japan and China (calculated on the basis of the population reduced to the 100 million richest inhabitants) was between 300 and 600 g, compared with 1.6 kg in the EU27 + United Kingdom and 3.7 kg in the United States.
