Deteriorated market conditions

The market conditions for sea-freight mangos deteriorated in December. By the second half of November, the acceleration in shipments from Brazil had altered the supply profile, to gradually overhaul demand. This trend was boosted by the increase in Brazilian shipments, whose later campaign seems to have encouraged a deferral of volumes to later in the season. On top of this increase came the progression of shipments from Peru, where the campaign was getting underway. The drop in sea-freight mango rates in late November/early December became a freefall in the second half of December. The massive quantities from Brazil and Peru came up against limited demand during the end-of-year holidays, leading to the formation of large stocks, which as they sold automatically led to a distinct downturn in sale prices. This downward trend was also aggravated by storage, detrimental to maintaining fruit quality. Many batches were offered at low prices (€2.50- €3.00/box), across all the origins and varieties. Others underwent commission sales on the wholesale markets. So the product had a particularly difficult end to 2022, in a context that was quiet overall. At the end of the year, operators in possession of Brazilian merchandise tried to sell off their stocks before focusing on mangos from Peru, which was embarking on its campaign.

The air-freight mango market had a complicated December, due to the large supply in the face of variable demand. Up against the increasing Peruvian shipments, Brazilian mangos struggled to find any takers. In spite of a temporary burst for the Christmas holidays in week 51, air-freight mango rates took a downturn. Most sales were made at cost prices for the merchandise, or at even lower levels.
