Although Chilean surface areas have been down since 2014, with this year’s total reportedly dropping to 48 000 ha (62 000 ha in 2014), production is set to be more abundant than last year, which was affected by climate conditions. Producers are hoping to hit the 900 000-t mark again (+ 7 % on 2016, and - 4 % on the 3-year average). Export prospects are also brighter, with a total of as much as 730 000 t (+ 6 % on 2016), i.e. back to the three-year average. The season began very early in November, due to the heat, and has maintained a rapid tempo which could bring an early end to the campaign in April. Exports were somewhat cut short last year, with a downturn on practically all destinations except for China (120 200 t, i.e. + 33 % on 2014-15).
