The year got off to a disappointing start. The overall supply remained heavy and bigger than in previous years due to stocks from the end of 2016 and ongoing high incoming shipments. Imports from Africa, still above-average because of new plantations and the low intensity of the Harmattan, continued to offset the very wide shortfall from the French West Indies. Meanwhile, dollar banana volumes were also greater than in previous years due to incoming shipments from Colombia and Costa Rica remaining well above-average, in particular in January (+ 17 %). Hence, despite seasonal demand stimulated by cool temperatures, weaker competition from citruses and the presence of promotions, stocks were available until mid-January, and the market balance could not be restored until the end of the month. Green banana prices stagnated at the same level as late 2016, and strengthened only from mid-January

February brought a smaller supply, though it was still in excess (+ 9 %). This fall helped the market finally recover some balance. Prices continued to strengthen slightly. However, they could make up for the delay at the beginning of the year. Levels remained disappointing and below-average.
