Sea freight monthly review: January 2019

January started much as it has done in recent years for both large and small tonnage. The large segment was faced with a slow start to the Chilean season, a high Ecuadorian exit price and the need to absorb eight large vessels re-delivered from the Chiquita transatlantic banana programme. The small segment had to focus on the tail-end of the N Cont to N Africa potato season and seasonally weak demand from Mauretania and Walvis Bay.

In a quiet month, there were pockets of positive news for the reefer mode: Seatrade started its new 5-vessel Zodiac service from Colombia and Central America to the UK and N Cont. The two Moroccan citrus boards MFB and FFM continued to combine to ship to the USEC. Joining forces meant they were able to charter larger vessels, thereby benefitting from lower unit costs. It also meant bidding New Bedford goodbye in favour of Delaware River terminals at the Port of Wilmington and Gloucester City, New Jersey. The move will allow the boards more efficient access in the development of the US eastern seaboard. And finally GreenSea took delivery of two of its four Orange Class freezer carriers.
