Mango monthly review: November 2019

In November, the mango market remained fairly stable. Spain continued its campaign with Keitt, albeit with volumes subsiding. The vast majority of the supply was provided by Brazil, with Tommy Atkins, Keitt, Palmer and Kent. The proportion of Kent gradually increased, making up the majority of incoming shipments in the second half of the month. After high levels in the first part of November, rates took a downturn at the end of the period due to the cumulative shipments, but also to quiet demand. The increase in Brazilian shipments was slower and smaller than in the previous campaign, helping prices maintain steadier and higher levels. The rapid decline in Brazilian produce should boost the start of the Peruvian campaign, which is set for mid-December. There will no overlap, as in certain years, between Brazilian and Peruvian produce, which leads to market congestion and low prices.

The air-freight market had a distinctly more difficult November. At the start of the month, Brazilian shipments enjoyed a favourable atmosphere, accompanied by high and strong prices. Yet market conditions very quickly deteriorated with the start of the Peruvian campaign. The first batches from Peru sold at high prices, yet the rapidly increasing volumes, combined with those from Brazil, led to market congestion and an accompanying fall in rates. The sluggishness in transactions was aggravated by the abundance of the supply from both origins, the predominance of small sizes and the advanced maturity of certain batches aggravated the sluggishness in transactions. Hence a bidding-down mechanism took hold, with commission batches selling for low prices on the wholesale markets. Operators are hoping that the run-up to the end-of-year holidays will revitalise the air-freight market.
