Ongoing price drop on the banana market in June

The overall supply was close to or slightly above average, despite the incipient seasonal fall from the African and dollar origins. Because of the production peak, shipments from the French West Indies underwent a sharp increase in May, before peaking in June (5 % above average). Regarding demand, the early heatwaves throughout Europe, combined with the arrival of seasonal fruits and the start of the school holidays, heavily curbed the sales tempo from mid-June. In this context green banana prices continued to drop, especially over the second half of the month, albeit they remained 23 % above average. In Eastern Europe, and more particularly in Poland, the pressure was sky-high because of numerous re-exports from Western Europe, with prices dropping to below average for the season (- 5 %).
