Costa Rican banana

Following a spell of heavy rains which hit the country in late 2021, causing a fall in productivity, banana shipments from Costa Rica to Europe were below average for the season from January to April 2022. The Costa Rican banana registered a cumulative level of around 7 % below average. Conversely, from May, import volumes regained some vigour and the shortfall narrowed. It was not until the autumn season increase that volumes regained above-average levels, helping Costa Rica end 2022 with total imports of 1 267 873 tonnes into the EU27+UK, a similar level to 2021, and around average. Note that the record for the US market was distinctly less rosy, with a very considerable fall of around 17 % from 2021.
