The Dominican Republic is one of the banana suppliers ofthe Caribbean zone that was severely affected during the 2017 hurricane period alongside Guadeloupe, Dominica and Martinique. The images of the floods were impressive. The damage was then judged by all very severe. Two months after the climatic events (hurricanes Irma then Maria), the assessment is less dramatic than announced. Stopped at week 45-2017, exports to the EU fell by 19% (down by 61 000 tonnes) compared to 2016 but "only" by 12% (37,000 tonnes less) compared to the average 2014-15-16. Better productivity and especially an extension of the areas played the role of buffer. A return to the highest level is therefore foreseeable in 2018.
