Since 2013, rainfalls in Spain have kept levels below average (-15% in 2016/2017). As a result, the water stocks are at their lowest level since 1995 (on a national level, dams are only filled up to 38% of their total capacity). The East - where citrus is mainly produced - is the most severly affected area by the drought.
The Spanish citrus crop forecasts for 2017/18 are down compared to last season due to the alternation phenomenon that has been exacerbated by the climate: December 2016 heavy rains, heat wave in May 2017 and drought in 2017.
