Better volumes in 2019-20

The stone fruits industry in South Africa is predicting better volumes for the 2019-20 season than the previous year, although the effects of the drought are ongoing in certain regions. Hence Hortgro has stated that it expects the total stone fruits harvest for the 2019-20 season to reach just over 17 million boxes (+ 13 % on 2018-19). Flowering was particularly good for plums, and so growers were initially hoping for an estimated harvest up by approximately 15 % on the previous one, undermined by the heatwave. However certain varieties, such as Angeleno, will be in shortfall, as the fruit-setting was not very good. Although it will remain below the three-year average (- 15 %), the peaches and nectarines harvest should also be bigger than the previous one (+ 17 %), with the entry into production of young orchards planted with modern varieties, boasting higher yields than the old cultivars. Conversely, apricot production should fall again due to uprooting of orchards.
