Average harvest expected

The NEPG (North-Western European Potato Growers) reckons that in 2019 production will obtain a figure of around 27 to 27.5 million tonnes across the five member countries, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and France. These volumes will be up (+ 12 %) on last year, a lean season, but near average (4 % above the 3-year average), due to the expanding surface areas (611 190 ha, i.e. +2 % on 2018). Yields will be average again this year, because of the summer drought. All the NEPG countries, with the exception of the United Kingdom, seeded more potatoes, with in particular France seeing a considerable increase to 14 % above the five-year average. Although it is raining now, yields in France, Belgium and many parts of Germany should be nothing exceptional. They may rise again in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Eastern Europe is also reporting distinctly lower yields. The EU’s satellite programme MARS is also predicting yields to be at least 5 to 10 % below the five-year average in Poland and in several other East European countries.
