Derivatives market under pressure given the prospect of another big harvest

Argentinean lemon production should be back to a high level in 2020. According to the USDA, it will reach 1.6 million tonnes, a similar level to 2019 and nearly 15 % above the four-year average. This is hardly an astonishing forecast given the surface area expansion dynamic in the Tucumán zone (approximately + 3 % per year nationally between 2010 and 2018, i.e. a gain of more than 10 000 ha, according to Federcitrus and EEAOC satellite surveys), and the parallel growth trend in productivity (renovation of old orchards, investments in planting, etc.). The industrial lemon derivatives market, nearly 50 % controlled by Argentina, responded negatively to this news. Prices of concentrated juice, already under pressure since early 2019, continued their downward trend, to reach their lowest level since 2013 (approximately 2 000 USD/tonne for 400 gpl FOB Argentina). Essential oil rates are barely doing any better, with bottom-end products trading at between 12 and 15 USD/kg according to IEG Vu.
