During a catastrophic 2020, Costa Rica, the world number one pineapple exporter, saw its exports to all destinations continue the fall which began in 2019. According to Procomer, 1.98 million tonnes of pineapples were exported in 2020 across all destinations, i.e. a fall of 300 000 tonnes from the high point in 2018, when exports were nearly 2.3 million tonnes. The downturn was particularly marked on the European market, with a fall from 2018 of as much as 20 %!

However, the recovery seems to be well underway in 2021: over the first 5 months of the year, Costa Rica shipped 7 % more than in 2020, and 2 % more than in 2019. Exports have reportedly risen to the USA (+ 4 %) and EU28 (+ 7 %), but above all to other destinations (+ 35 %), especially the Middle East! Nonetheless, the 2018 record still seems a long way off.
