Madagascan litchi: campaign less early than forecast

The latest surveys by the CTHT (Toamasina Horticultural Technical Centre) indicate that the extension of the Southern winter is slowing down litchi bulking. The lack of rainfall until early October, as well as the slow rise in temperatures, are preventing the fruit from developing at the same tempo as last year. In mid-October, the harvest was set to begin at the end of week 46 or the start of week 47. Under these conditions, the first sea-freight Madagascan litchis would not be available in Europe until the end of the first third of December. As in previous years, the fruit will be routed on the same two conventional ships, probably with the first one serving a Mediterranean port, and the second docking in Belgium.
