With fresh pineapple imports of nearly 1 080 000 tonnes between January and November 2022, the US market beat its pineapple import record. Over eleven months in 2022, volumes were up by 6 % on the same period of 2021, due solely to the vitality Costa Rica, which registered a 7 % rise. The other origins, which represent a market share of just 13 %, struggled to maintain their positions against the Costa Rican tidal wave, dropping by 3 %. Mexico, despite being the number two supplier to the US market until 2018, has constantly lost ground in the face of pressure from the Central American origins, especially Costa Rica and to a lesser degree Honduras. Guatemala and Ecuador were stagnant, with moderate volumes. Behind this explosive Costa Rican dynamic to the USA, we should note that the euro/dollar exchange rate has turned heavily against the European market, which partly explains the heavy trade focus on the USA in 2022.
