Market profile

Poland saw dazzling economic development, with its GDP nearly tripling, over the thirty years following the collapse of the Eastern Bloc. The country is now the European Union’s eighth largest economy, and the biggest Central and East European market for food and beverage products. The arrival of Western retailers in the 1990s brought rapid modernisation of the distribution sector. In this context consumption of the banana, a product practically absent from the Polish market before the 1990s, saw a phenomenal surge. The acceleration has been particularly marked over the past decade, with banana consumption per capita more than doubling, and import volumes tripling. The modernisation of the retail sector is continuing with certification, although there is little demand for this, and above all with discount stores, whose main sale factor remains price. The emergence of large-scale domestic operators has also contributed to consolidating Poland’s place as a banana trade hub to Central and Eastern Europe.
