The mango market followed a positive trend in March

The mango market followed a positive trend in March. The change of harvest zone in Peru at the beginning of the month caused a slight supply trough, which helped rates to strengthen. Harvesting was wound down in the Piura region, giving way to fruit from the Motupe and Casma zones. In spite of substantial shipments, Peruvian mango rates strengthened due to rising demand. The preparations for the Easter holidays invigorated sales, particularly during the last two weeks of the month. Peruvian shipments were heavily disrupted in the middle of the month by strike action in the transport sector. These movements did not however hinder the Easter supply, given the transport times between Peru and Europe. Prices remained strong, with sales fluid right up to the end of the month.

The air-freight mango market was more mixed, due to variations in volumes received, caused by the logistical difficulties and the supply frequently not meeting demand in terms of sizing. The increasing quantities of large-sized fruit was a brake on sales in certain market sectors. Demand was invigorated in the run-up to the Easter holidays, especially since availability was tending to dwindle. Prices saw a distinct increase in the second part of the month. This was partly down to the livelier demand, but it also to the increased cost and logistical prices of the product. Meanwhile, sea-freight mangos of air-freight quality were being placed on the market, trading at slightly lower prices than air-freight produce, taking advantage of the strong demand during this period. At the end of the month, the first West African batches appeared, with Amélie mangos from Burkina Faso selling on a footing of €3.50/kg.
