Just like oranges and easy peelers, the grapefruit registered a distinct downturn in production. According to Ailimpo, the harvest expected in 2017-18 is around 61 000 t, the lowest level for the past four seasons. This is down to the alternate bearing effect, a cold spell during flowering and the drought. Exports could see a smaller downturn than production (- 25 % from 2016-17) since fruit size appears to be larger. The lemon appears to be the only citrus in Spain to escape the big generalised production fall. Again according to Ailimpo, the volumes harvested should be around 1.1 million tonnes, a comparable level to 2016-17 and more than 20 % above then ten-year average. This stability, which contrasts with the trend expected for the other citruses, is symptomatic of the big expansion of the Spanish lemon cultivation area.
