Record prices, attracting unexpected volumes!

Nature abhors a vacuum… as do avocado exporters..

The supply to Europe, which was supposed to be limited, ended up setting a record level of around 190 000 t (according to our estimate, pending the Customs figures). However, as predicted, volumes from the big Mediterranean producer countries were distinctly in shortfall. Israeli and Spanish exports should register a downturn of 15 to 20 % from the previous season, because of the weather curbing production (spring heatwaves 2015 especially). However, incoming Latin American shipments set a record level, defying all the forecasts. Chile recorded its biggest campaign of all time in Europe, dedicating more than 70 % of its export potential to the Old Continent (approximately 77 000 t, i.e. 35 000 t more than in 2014-15). Similarly, Mexico more than confirmed its return, with incoming shipments of 25 000 t equating to double the volumes received in 2014-15. The reason for the renewed affection of these two supplier countries is of course to be found in the prices, which also beat a record, with our indicator climbing to 10.70 euros/box. This level made the European market much more appealing than the US market, encouraging Chilean exporters to alter their trade programme in favour of Europe, and European importers to trade more in the Mexican Hass, despite its high cost price. This campaign brilliantly demonstrates that the European market has nothing to envy the US market in terms of appeal!
