The Greek avocado industry is concentrated primarily in North-West Crete, and remains limited in area to an estimated 2 000 ha. This part of the island enjoys excellent growing conditions, with in particular a relatively good level of water resources for a Mediterranean region, and a favourable sanitary status due to its insular nature. Nonetheless, the limited size of its planted area is curbing competitiveness and technical development. Prospects for growth appear limited, and achievable primarily through productivity gains, in a context of both high land and labour pressure. Upmarketing via organic and a PGI are strategic avenues to explore.
