Unlike the past two seasons, South African citrus exports should see only a small rise in 2019. This atypical development is due to the specialities from the north of the country, namely Valencia oranges and grapefruits, production of which should be down due to lack of rain in this region. The export potentials of these two products, currently registering a small drop from last season, could nonetheless be revised upward if more favourable climate conditions return. Navel volumes available for the international market are reportedly stable. Conversely, the young orchards are continuing to enter their prime, both for the lemon and easy peelers. Export potentials are registering a 10 to 13 % rise from last season, nearly 30 to 40 % above the four-year average. This overall exports level practically unchanged from 2018 must not be misinterpreted. South African production will continue to come into its own, particularly for late easy peelers and the lemon. The export potential across all citruses should approach 180 million 15-kg boxes in 2022 (+ 30 % on 2018), with a rise of more than 60 % for easy peelers and the lemon.
