The very first info on the 2016 New Zealand kiwi campaign indicates a good potential. Zespri announced this year that its export level should be similar to last year for green kiwi, i.e. 77 million crates, and a big increase for Sungold. Volumes already reached 27 million crates last year for this variety (as opposed to 11 million in 2014), with a big rise in shipments across all varieties to Asia (+50 % for China and +13 % for Japan). So surface areas should continue to increase. Due to the very strong Sungold demand, Zespri has taken the decision to authorise the planting of an additional 400 ha this year, and then for the coming three years until 2019, to add to the 4 800 ha already planted.
