While the Kenyan pineapple industry goes back more than 50 years, with production aimed mainly at the canning industry, a youthful fresh fruit industry emerged in 2017. This was driven by a single operator with great experience in the pineapple industry, Del Monte. Thanks to the Sweet variety (MD2) and the unique local conditions, giving the fruit favourable organoleptic qualities, this group developed fresh pineapple exports initially to the nearby markets of the Middle East, and more recently to the European Union.
