Plantain banana

After the shortfall in December, Colombian shipments resumed a steadier tempo which, as would be expected, sent sale prices on a downward trend. They stabilised in February at around 1.00 euro/kg. In early March, some incoming shipments of mediocre quality and advanced maturity caused a temporary price fall, with sale prices starting at 0.45 euro/kg. The Colombian supply, which dominated the market, dictated the prices set for the competing Ecuadorian produce, most often slightly below those of the Colombian fruit.

Chayote and christophine

The French chayote campaign came to an early end in mid-February, with fruits of more haphazard quality. In 2015, French chayotes remained on sale until mid-March. The final French-produced christophines were sold in January at a constant price of 1.80 euro/kg. Rates were high, and slightly on the up for Costa Rican chayotes and christophines, in view of the moderate supply levels, which were below demand.

Dasheen

Hitherto limited, Saint Vincent dasheen supply levels increased in Q1 2016, causing the sale prices to drop gradually. From nearly 4.00 euros/kg in December 2015, the dasheen rate started dropping from the beginning of the year and decreased constantly thereafter, losing practically 1.00 euro/kg by the end of Q1 2016. Meanwhile, some air-freight batches from Martinique traded on an unchanged footing of 4.00 euros/kg, with limited quantities.

Chilli pepper

The limited supply level during Q1 2016 helped generate high prices. The Dominican Republic shipped variable quantities, which explains the price fluctuations registered, especially the dip in rates during February. Rates of chilli peppers from Martinique overall maintained a slightly higher level than those of Dominican produce, with irregular shipments of limited quantities. In the second half of February, Guadeloupe regularly sent superior quality produce, which obtained higher prices.
