No two passing seasons are alike in New Zealand. After a record harvest of 7.1 million boxes in 2014-15, production slumped to 4.0 million boxes, in this country characterised by highly marked alternate bearing effects. Conversely, demand was not found wanting. The product is increasingly prized on the local market, despite a price which peaked at 3 NZD per piece in late February (more than 1.80 euros), with exporters having to manage a shortage to supply Australia and Asia. Production should continue to increase over the coming years, though at a more modest tempo than predicted. The cultivation area, which was expanding greatly until 2012-13, has shrunk slightly in recent years, with producers concentrating on increasing productivity. The 2016-17 harvest should be between 4.5 and 5.2 million 5.5-kg boxes (i.e. 25 000 t to 29 000 t).
