Standard Fruit, a subsidiary of the US multinational, has announced a planting programme of 1 200 ha in the country. The expected production is around 3 million export boxes per year. At present, Dole apparently exports approximately 25 million boxes per year from Honduras, as opposed to 12 million boxes for Chiquita, the country’s other big player. Independent producers apparently represent just 3 000 ha of the 20 000 ha planted area.
