The Southern Hemisphere apple export campaign has begun...
The first volumes arrived in Europe in March, though they should remain very modest since the European stock is still substantial. It was actually 2.88 million tonnes on 1 March 2016, i.e. a level equivalent to 2015 and 18 % above the three-year average. However, volumes have decreased considerably for certain varieties such as Gala, though the end of the season could be extended like last year, since sales are now slower with the end of sea-freight exports and the beginning of Southern Hemisphere shipments. Volumes are smaller overall for end-of-season varieties such as Jonagold/Jonagored or Golden, though stocks are above the three-year average. Furthermore, availability is still high for the other varieties, such as Granny or Braeburn.
